Tips for Parents with New Teen Drivers

Safe driving tips for parents.

It’s a momentous occasion – Your teen just got their driver’s license! Although you’re incredibly proud of them for completing this milestone, it’s also a nerve-racking time as they take the wheel. After all, the statistics are concerning – motor vehicle crashes continue to be the leading cause of death in the U.S. for 15 to 20-year olds. If your teen has recently received their driver’s license, take a look at these tips.

Set driving boundaries

Discuss driving guidelines and boundaries with your teen before letting them have the keys. Perhaps you don’t want them driving more than 30 minutes away from home, driving at night, or driving their friends – at least until they have built up their confidence behind the wheel.

Explain the consequences

As an adult, you are well aware of the driving risks that motorists face every day. However, your teenager may not understand the consequences of their driving actions. Talk to your teen about how even a moment of distraction can have damaging effects.

Lead by example

Practice safe driving when you’re behind the wheel. Follow the rules of the road, avoid distracted driving, and your teenager is more likely to follow suit.

It’s Get Organized Month: Update Your Home Inventory

Easy ways to review and update your home inventory for 2019.

Did you know that January is Get Organized Month? This time of year is ideal for getting your ducks in a row. One of the best New Year’s resolutions we can advise is to review and update your home inventory. During this month of getting organized, it offers the perfect opportunity to make sure that your insurance policies align with your needs.

  • Move room by room

The easiest way to update a home inventory is often done by moving room by room, examining the items currently listed in each space. Then, scan the list of items and the photos to determine what additions, deletions, or corrections need to be made.

  • Have valuables appraised

Have your high-value belongings been sitting in a storage box for some time? If so, it could be worth getting these items appraised. Some belongings, such as gemstones, increase in value over time. Pass the appraisals on to your insurance representative if you choose to insure those items separately.

  • Update all copies and store them safely

Now you’ve conducted your home inventory, it’s important to save it and replace the older versions. Whether you have a written inventory or a digital document, you will want to keep this list safe. If you store it digitally, place one copy of it in the cloud so that you can access it from anywhere. Also, it is a good idea to email a copy of it to yourself – just to be safe. If you have a paper document, make copies and keep them in fire-proof safety boxes.
